Heather Durnin is Gr. 7/8 teacher in a very small SW Ontario rural school, in the Avon Maitland D.S.B. Her students use technology almost daily to share and create with other students they’ll likely never meet face to face across our school board and beyond. She believes that "the process is just as important as the product". Her students would agree that “we learn better together.”
During the 2010/11 school year, her students collaborated with Clarence Fishers gr. 7/8 class in Snow Lake, Manitoba on various projects. A major project featured Markus Zusak's novel, The Book Thief. Using various web 2.0 tools including Google Docs, Skype, Linoit, Wordpress blogs, and TodaysMeet, students shared their reflections as the novel was being read to them. This was followed by the publication of a book written by the students using Google docs, called "A Field Guide to Molching", and a visit via Skype, with Markus Zusak. The Idea Hive collaboration will continue in the 2011/2012 school year.
